Bylaws of the Latina/o Law Student Association

Section 1

The accepted rules of order concerning parliamentary procedures shall be Roberts Rules of Order, Revised. These rules shall coexist with the Constitution, and will be used to govern meetings and resolve disagreement.

1.1 The President shall ensure that a copy of Roberts Rules of Order, Revised, is available at every meeting.

Section 2

Elections for President, Academic Vice-President, Community Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, LEO Representative and Legal-Community Liaison shall take place in March of each academic year.

Any member may nominate a LLSA active member as officer. LLSA active members must be full-time law students to hold any office.

2.2 All nominated persons reserve the right to decline their nomination with no required explanation.

2.3 The candidates receiving the greatest number of votes in each of these elections shall assume office immediately upon announcement of the results by the Election Commissioner.

2.4 If two or more candidates should tie for most votes received in an election, a run-off election shall be held between those candidates involved in the tie.

2.5 An Election Commissioner shall be appointed by the Executive Board form a pool of active member applicants, none of which may be running for an elected office on the day of the election.

Section 3

The offices of the organization shall consist of a President, Academic Vice-President, Community Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, LEO Representative, and Legal-Community Liaison.

1.1 The officers shall be elected annually out of the voting membership, and must be in good standing with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School.

Section 2

All officers shall hold office during the term of one year from the date of election.

Section 3

3.1 All members shall pay the yearly dues of 20 dollars ($20.00) within the designated time determined by the active membership and attend at least three meetings per semester to be considered an active member. Executive Board members shall attend all meetings, unless an emergency prevents him/her from attending.

3.2 Members not considered active members may participate in the meetings; however, they may not vote on motions or in elections.

Section 4

Standing committees are as defined in the Constitution. All other committees may be formed as prescribed in the Constitution.

Section 5

Vacancies shall be filled in the following manner:

5.1 President - the Academic Vice-President shall assume the office of President should a vacancy occur before the end of the current term.

5.2 All other officers - a special election shall be held; nominations shall be taken at a designated meeting, with an election to follow to determine the new officer.

5.3 All elected offices office shall be determined by a majority of those eligible voters present at the time prescribed meeting.

Section 6

By-laws shall be amended by a majority of all active members and at least two officers after proper notice has been given to all concerned. This Constitution was has been appropriately approved by the LLSA membership.
