Attorney Len Weinglass Speaks about the Cuban 5 Case

Monday, November 12, 2007. 12pm Noon. Room 5246.

Attorney Len Weinglass will speak about the case of the Cuban 5. Attorney Weinglass represents Fernando Gonzalez, one of a group of five Cuban nationals in federal prison on espionage charges. The 5 were in the US to monitor Miami-based anti-Castro groups in order to prevent terrorist attacks on Cuba.

They were convicted in a federal court in Miami, but a 3-judge appellate panel overturned the convictions on grounds that the 5 could receive a fair trial in Miami. However, in an unexpected reversal, the 11th Circuit Court vacated the three-judge panel's ruling and granted an "en banc" hearing before the full panel of 12 judges. Exactly one year after the victory that granted the Five a new trial, the panel voted 10 to 2 to deny the Five heroes a new trial, and instead affirmed the trial court.

Attorney Weinglass in a veteran civil rights and criminal defense attorney. He has led several other high-profile cases, including Mumia Abu-Jamal and the Chicago Seven.

If you want more information about the Cuban 5 campaign, see http://www.freethecuban5.com/page3.html or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Five, or hit up the google.

Knowing our Rights / Conociendo nuestros Derechos Workshop Facilitator Training

Thurdsay, November 1
7:00 -- 9:00 pm
Room 5229

This training will give law students the basic knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate "Knowing our Rights / Conociendo nuestros Derechos" workshops in the Madison-area community. It is a community-based immigrants' rights workshop facilitated by law student representatives of the National Lawyers Guild Immigration Project and the Latino/a Law Students Association, and is interactive and bilingual (English - Spanish).

Topics covered include:

* Rights at home
* Rights at work
* Rights on the street (on foot or in a car)
* Rights with relation to protest
* Rights in detention
* .....more.....

The aim of the workshop is to empower immigrants or interested parties with information about immigrants' rights, so we avoid lecturing or "leading" as much as possible. Facilitators guide workshops, but the majority of acting and talking done by participants, if possible. That guidance, then, includes framing of the workshop, answering questions, and filling in gaps of information where necessary. Facilitators will also be expected to help plan/schedule workshops in the community.

The workshops are typically completely free and open to the public. Training is also free and open to all law students (regardless of student org affiliations).

Please contact Megan Beaman (beaman@wisc.edu ) with any questions.

UW-LLSA To Host 11th Annual National Latina/o Law Student Association Conference

The University of Wisconsin Law School Latina/o Law Student Association (UW-LLSA) has been selected to host the Eleventh Annual National Latina/o Law Student Association Conference in October 2007. This will be the first NLLSA Conference to be held in the Midwest.

The event will bring approximately 300 Latina/o law students and attorneys from across the nation to Madison. The conference theme is "¡Adelante!: Recognizing Our Diversity, Unifying Our Voices."

"I am very excited for our LLSA Chapter," said LLSA president and NLLSA secretary Claudia Catota. "Although it will be a lot of hard work, this is a tremendous opportunity for us to work together and to showcase the many things that we do."

UW-LLSA was chosen by the NNLSA Executive Board to host the event after submitting a detailed proposal that included ideas for an open forum and debate on immigration, community service projects, and suggested topics for workshops and panel discussions.

Catota added acknowledgment for the hard work of the LLSA Conference Bid Committee: Isela Arellano 3L, Micaela Vidaña 2L, Jill Smith 1L, Brenda Thomas 3L, Roberto Gradilla 2L, Mackenzie Bishop 2L, Aileen Zeledon 2L, Anthony Jimenez 1L, I-Che Lai 3L, and Francisco Ortega 3L.
